Ma’rufin mengatakan berdasarkan penelitian Astrofotografer asal Prancis, Thierry Legault, disebutkan wahana antariksa itu gagal dihubungi dari Bumi dikarenakan commission surya disatelit tersebut membelakangi posisi Matahari, sehingga tidak cukup tersedia energi listrik. “Hal itu yang menyebabkan Phobos-Grunt gagal ke Mars karena macet di itinerary Bumi,†ungkap astronom yang tergabung dalam Jogja Astro Club. Runtuhan satelit ini, lanjut Ma’rufin, diperkirakan akan jatuh di bumi tanggal 9- 20 Januari 2012, pada saat fajar sekitar pukul 03.00-05.00 WIB atau painful hari sekitar pukul 13.00-16.00 WIB. “Hampir seluruh wilayah di state termasuk ke dalam daerah lintasannya,†paparnya. Dia menjelaskan secara prinsip terdapat dua bahaya yang perlu diwaspadai dari runtuhan satelit ini, yakni bahaya tumbukan dan toksisitas. “Jika reruntukan lebih dari 200 kilo itu jatuh dan menimpa rumah maka akan mirip seperti kasus jatuhan light di Duren Sawit pada 2010 lalu,†ujarnya. Bahaya selanjutnya adalah bahaya toksisitas karena Phobos-Grunt mengandung senyawa kimia sangat beracun, Dimetil Hidrain, yang jika terkena kulit akan menyebabkan melepuh dan bisa menyerupai luka bakar. “Jadi kalau masyarakat menemukan reruntuhan satelit itu, jangan langsung mendekat atau memegang. Segera laporkan ke pihak berwenang,†imbuh dia. Menurut dia, semua satelit yang mengalami macet di itinerary bumi memiliki risiko demikian, namun Phobos-Grunt memiliki massa yang sangat besar dan bahan toksik sangat banyak maka menjadikan reruntuhan satelit ini berbahaya.
